WINTER BALLET: DYLAN THOMAS A CHILD’S CHRISTMAS, POEMS AND TIGER EGGS

With live performance by Cerys Matthews and Arun GhoshCerys Matthews

A ballet based on Dylan Thomas’s story ’A Child’s Christmas in Wales’, with music and narration by Cerys Matthews, will be danced by Ballet Cymru during a UK tour.

Cerys Matthews and Jazzwise’s Jazz Instrumentalist of the Year Arun Ghosh will appear live with the company at The Riverfront, Newport (9th and 10th Nov), Sadler’s Wells, London ( 3rd and 4th Nov) and Pontio Bangor (1st Dec). This is the first time Cerys has performed live in almost five years so will be a truly spellbinding occasion.

Inspired by the matrimony of music and narration in Prokofiev’s Peter And The Wolf, Matthews ambitiously put Dylan Thomas’ A Child’s Christmas to music. The result was a magical piece of work that takes you on a wonderful journey that is loved by children and adults alike.

The story enters Dylan’s imagination with adventures through snow, a ghost story, cats, hippos, presents, rum and uncles snoring by the fire. Featuring choreography by Creative Wales’ award winner Darius James and Amy Doughty with evocative, eloquent costumes, Ballet Cymru brings this enduring story to life through the company’s blend of classical technique and storytelling.

Cerys commented; ‘ Dylan Thomas captures something so special in his ‘A Child’s Christmas ‘, a story of expectation and belonging , that sense of wonder one feels in the festive season wherever you’re from. Here we have a perfect foil for the award winning choreography of Ballet Cymru, and together they gift the world a fresh new winter ballet. I’m thrilled with the production, and doubly so, as I’ll be joining them live on stage for 5 of the shows to narrate some Dylan classics.
