Under Milk Wood
A play for voices is now a dance for words.
Dylan Thomas produced a work of enduring brilliance with his play for voices “Under Milk Wood”. Richard Burton added to the legacy with a classic recording that resonates even today. Now Ballet Cymru invite you to listen in on the innermost thoughts and dreams of the people of Llareggub.
The classic play is successfully interpreted in dance, ballet and innovative physical theatre, with all its dark humor, vivid characters and visionary language. Join Mrs. Ogmore-Pritchard, relentlessly bossing her two dead husbands, or Captain Cat reliving his seafaring times. Watch Organ Morgan, obsessed with his music, and Polly Garter pining for her dead lover. Enter the bible black village and swim in the fishing boat bobbing sea.
‘Under Milk Wood’ features a score by Macmillan Award winning composer Thomas Hewitt Jones, paintings by Welsh artist Jeremy Thomas and narrative delivered by outstanding welsh actor and Company Patron, Gwyn Vaughan Jones.
‘We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the likes of Independent Ballet Wales (now Ballet Cymru). How refreshing to spend an evening with dancers creating a world through their personalities and imagination.’
Jeffery Taylor, Daily Express
‘….the wonderful new music, composed, orchestrated and partly performed live by Thomas Hewitt Jones. 5 stars.’
Overall this ballet, like Thomas’s lyricism, oscillates between the dream-charged and the visceral. It is tender yet knowing. In this we have an intimate yet wry elevation of the everyday. If only ballet as original and innovative arrived to Wales more often’
Chris Paul, Theatre in Wales
‘In their delightfully visual adaptation of Under Milk Wood, Ballet Cymru have found a way to celebrate the quirkiness of an adult world with all the charm and comfort of a children’s book.’
