Roald Dahl’s Little Red Riding Hood & The Three Little Pigs
Award winning company, Ballet Cymru, present an extraordinary vision. Two stories from the mind of the most popular storyteller in the world, Roald Dahl.
Roald Dahl was born in Llandaff, Cardiff and now two of his hugely popular stories come home to Wales in ballet adaptations. Ballet Cymru were granted permission from The Dahl Foundation to produce two works based on sections of Roald Dahl’s ‘Revolting Rhymes’, ‘Little Red Riding Hood and Three Little Pigs’.
Nothing is ever quite what it seems…
Both works are based on the outstanding and internationally recognised musical scores by composer Paul Patterson. The two scores were commissioned by The Dahl Foundation and have become children’s classics played all over the globe. The “Little Red Riding Hood” score featured in a 1995 BBC Christmas Day special featuring the voices of Ian Holm, Julie Walters and Danny DeVito. Now Patterson’s dazzling scores are set in dance for the first time.
This outstanding classical ballet was choreographed by Darius James and Amy Doughty with music by composer Paul Patterson, costumes by Steve Denton and a stunning lighting design by John Bishop. With the support of the Dahl Foundation, the production toured throughout the UK, including Sadler’s Wells. At the premiere in Newport, Felicity Dahl, Roald’s wife and Donald Sturrock, Dahl’s biographer were in attendance.
In December 2016 the performance of Little Red Riding Hood on the Donald Gordon stage at the Wales Millennium Centre Cardiff with BBC National Orchestra of Wales was a tremendous success, selling 1,720 tickets to an ecstatic audience of all ages, with rave reviews on Arts Scene in Wales by Mike Smith and by Jane Lambert on Terpsichore.
Ballet Cymru were thrilled to win the award for Best Dance Production 2016 at the Wales Theatre Awards for Little Red Riding Hood.
‘in Little Red Riding Hood and its companion piece, The Three Little Pigs, Darius James and Amy Doughty have created choreography at uses the simplest of means to capture imaginatively the wit of Dahl’s verse and the charm of Paul Patterson’s music. Not too short, and not too long, the evening was a complete delight from start to finish’
Jonathan Gray, Dancing Times
‘It’s a small enterprise with a great deal to shout about. The formula is winning, deftly translating each sentence of the story into vivacious, easily decipherable dance sequences.’
Deborah Weiss, Dance Europe Jan 2013
‘Engaging, imaginative ballet adaptations of Roald Dahl entertain adults and children alike. 4 stars’
